Dr. Najiba Mustafayeva, a faculty member of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Ibn Haldun University, has recently published an article on climate change and human rights in the latest issue of the Baku State University Law Review.
Titled "Human Rights Perspectives on Climate Change and Landmine Contamination in Azerbaijan", the article explores the intersection of climate change and human rights, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable communities and restoring environmental justice in post-conflict regions.
In her work, Dr. Mustafayeva advocates for a human rights-based approach to combating climate change, focusing on environmental protection and sustainable development. The article highlights the COP29 Conference in Baku, where Azerbaijan's efforts to address landmine contamination from the Second Karabakh War are underscored as part of a broader, rights-centered environmental policy.
By examining the Azerbaijani context, this article calls for the integration of environmental
justice and human rights, especially regarding post-conflict reconstruction. It also reflects on the anticipated Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice, shedding light on the responsibilities of states concerning climate change. Dr. Mustafayeva’s research seeks to contribute to the establishment of a new legal framework to address pressing environmental and human rights challenges in post-conflict scenarios.
